A rare beast indeed. The Faber-Castell TK Fine Vario L pencil is a high-quality pencil precision-engineered for the discerning user. The grooved metal grip area gives a nice balance to the pencil. There's a long lead sleeve which makes it suitable for drafting. The trick that makes the Vario unique however, is the lead cushioning setting. Switch to Hard via a simple twist of the barrel, for drafting and the lead is unyielding. Switch to Soft for writing, and the lead becomes sprung, giving slightly to pressure.

  • With patented "Soft/Hard" mechanism:
  • SOFT: the lead is cushioned for writing
  • HARD: the lead is held rigid for drawing.
  • A lead degree indicator (which runs from 4H to 2B).
  • A metal pocket clip and an extra-long twist eraser.
  • Available in 4 line widths : 0.3 / 0.35 mm, 0.5 mm, 0.7 mm, 0.9 / 1.0 mm
  • With colour code for line width.

  1. Not as advertised

The soft/hard cushioning function does not work on the pencil that I purchased. Other than that this is a fine, classy looking pencil. Some artists/draftsmen may have issued with the reflective qualities of the metal grip and pencil clip (which I solved by sanding lightly to produce a non-reflective finish,) but overall it is a well balanced, reliable pencil. The lead feed tube inside is rather narrow, and probably won't hold more than 4 leads at a time.
